A new Audio Podcast (February, 2012) features the Dark Skies Crusader, GLOBE at Night’s February campaign and the “Adopt-a-Street” program.

Join the Dark Skies Crusader in our latest 6-minute audio podcast for February 1 at 365daysofastronomy.org. Two cities are pitched against each other in a fictitious competition to take the most GLOBE at Night data by having teams "adopt-a-street". The challenge is afoot between Denver and Tucson to take measurements every mile along streets for as far as they can. For you to take measurements, compare what you see to 7 different charts on the webapp. Then report the charts you choose either in real time or afterwards on-line on the webapp. If you want to report in real time, you use any smart mobile phone or tablet. Then your location, date and time are entered automatically. Be the city with the most measurements and your city will be featured on the GLOBE at Night web page and Facebook page. Adopt-a-street in your city during the February 12-21 campaign!

2011 Results Summary

More countries than ever before participated in the 2011 GLOBE at Night campaign. Nearly all of the 14,249 measurements were taken by 48 of the 115 countries. Click links below to view results.

The GLOBE at Night program is an international citizen-science campaign to raise public awareness of the impact of light pollution by inviting citizen-scientists to measure their night sky brightness and submit their observations to a website from a computer or smart phone. Light pollution threatens not only our “right to starlight”, but can affect energy consumption, wildlife and health. The GLOBE at Night campaign has run for two weeks each winter/spring for the last six years. People in 115 countries have contributed 66,000 measurements, making GLOBE at Night one of the most successful light pollution awareness campaigns.

Check out the new web application data submission process. The GLOBE at Night website is easy to use, comprehensive and holds an abundance of background information. The database is usable for comparisons with a variety of other databases, like how light pollution affects the foraging habits of bats.

Once again the GLOBE at Night Team would like to express their thanks to all the participants who contributed measurements locally to make a global difference.
